Hot Stuff: Cinemalaya Goes Online For Its 16th Year!

Cinephiles out there always look forward to Cinemalaya, hoping to catch the best of independent film in the Philippines. But with the COVID-19 pandemic still going strong in the country, it's important that cinemas, which usually kept large groups of people in an enclosed space for a long time, remain closed for everyone's safety.

In a less connected world, this might have meant the end of the Cinemalaya film festival. But technology has allowed them to take everything there online! 10 short films are set to compete for the Best Film award, according to them, and 20 more have been curated for a program called 'Short Films in Exhibition.'

This emphasis on short films was another adaptation for the pandemic, Festival Director Chris Millado said. Directors working on feature-length films simply didn't have the time to finish their work with the imposition of quarantine on March 16, so the filmmakers and the Cinemalaya committee collectively decided to delay the premiers of these feature-length films to Cinemalaya 2021.

The short films, however, have been completed, and this is what prompted the Cinemalaya to focus on short films for this year's selection.

This year's selection is one with a wide range of genres and mediums, from workplace satire:

to a surreal love story...

and even films looking to push the boundaries of the medium!
